Bernardo was awarded Urian Best Actor for his portrayal of Manay Sharon, film director Ishmael Bernal's alter ego, in the critically acclaimed MANILA BY NIGHT. Bernardo was Mastroianni to Bernal's Fellini.
REVIEWS OF MANILA BY NIGHT:
"When you consider the greatest male performances in Philippine cinema, the following names should come to mind: Leopoldo Salcedo in Gerry de Leon and Manuel Silos opuses; Christopher de Leon in Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang and Rafael “Bembol” Roco Jr. in Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag; Vic Silayan as the monster father in Kisapmata; and even Fernando Poe Jr. at his laconic best as the patriarch in Eddie Romero’s Agila. All of them, macho portrayals, and all of them striving to be portraits of the Filipino Everyman.
"That list would be woefully inadequate if it doesn’t include the finest, roundest, deepest interpretation of the Filipino Everyman – that just happens to be through the character of a screaming faggot of a couturier. Bernardo Bernardo in the performance of two lifetimes as Manay Sharon in director Ishmael Bernal’s masterpiece Manila By Night.
"With the long-overdue DVD release (Regal Films Platinum Series) of the 1980 film (originally released in Philippine theaters in a martial-law version called City After Dark), today’s audiences can finally see what caused all the fuss a quarter century ago and still be shocked by its freshness and its potency.
"They can also get to appreciate Bernardo’s many-hued, delicately-limned performance which won him the highly-regarded Urian (the Philippine national critic’s association) Award for Best Actor.... But now, fans in both sides of the world can savor the essential “BB” in Manila By Night – up there as the best performance by an actor in Philippine cinema, bar none, in the past 25 years."

"Bernardo Bernardo: ACTOR'S ACTOR"
PHILIPINE NEWS, (November 2005)
"ISHMAEL BERNAL’S MANILA BY NIGHT is the most shocking, the most daring, and the most mind-boggling Filipino film I’ve ever seen...It is Bernardo Bernardo who easily stands out, lending conviction to his role as the gay designer and delivering an unforgettably trenchant performance filled with much vitality and passion."

"The Urian Awards in 1980 honored a non-traditional actor for portraying a role that was unconventional. The country's most prestigious acting award-giving body then - the elite Manila film critics' circle - saw the masterful performance of an Actor's Actor who stood out in a league that was mainly peopled by glamour talents.
"Bernardo, after Urian, formally entered the league of the country's best actors ---Christopher de Leon, Phillip Salvador, Eddie Garcia among a few of them. To that distinction he adds the many other facets that not all of these actors have: a brilliant presence in dance, even musicals; theater acting; and directing for stage and television."

"BERNARDO: ACTOR'S ACTOR," Cover Story
MANILAOUT (August 1999)
"An Actor’s director, Bernal has succeeded in drawing the best from his actors... (Bernal) has discreetly refrained from creating characters with homosexual sensibility... the gay character of Bernardo Bernardo in City After Dark (Manila By Night) is something else. He is a multi-dimensional human being with a misleading feminine exterior but tough, masculine sensibility."

Coincidentally, in the 1980 Urian Awards, both Bernardo and Aunor were awarded the coveted Urian Trophy for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively.
